Internships--Networking & Making Connections

Becca Dudley, MTV UK Presenter
Interning for a company or freelance artist is one of the best things anyone can do in their lives. Interning abroad--is even better. It opens you up to a whole new world of ideas, people, and ways of thinking. No matter where you intern, you will learn so much about yourself and your capabilities that you never knew before. I am grateful to say that while in London I interned for a freelance Stylist, Rebekah Roy. Though I loved fashion & all things with it, it was not my exact area of focus. My major was undeclared at that point so I picked an internship that sounded challenging and interesting to me. I definitely picked the right one. Even if you have no idea what you want to do yet, try applying for an internship that appeals to you in some way. I've known many people who did that and ended up choosing it as their career path! Fancy that. The idea is, anything that you choose to do will teach you some things along the way. Even if you hate it--you stick with it until the end. Follow through with your commitments and work hard for those who hired you. They will be so grateful for all the work you accomplish for them and their company. At the end of the day, you will be feeling pretty great too. Here's what I learned while interning abroad: First, Have Confidence in yourself. When I first met my boss I was terrified of all the work and commuting I would be doing, mostly because I was in a new city with a new way of transport. But my boss taught me from the very first day to believe in myself. The only way to learn is to mess up, get things wrong, get lost. . Getting lost is the only way you will find yourself. Things may seem hard and impossible to figure out at first. But with time and repetition, you will get it down. You will be so proud of yourself for accomplishing something you never thought you could. Confidence. It's key. Secondly, Make Connections. This is especially true when working abroad. It is important to make friends and network with people. One day you may return to that country, and what do you know? Now you have someone to contact, whether it be for business or just to catch up with. While I was abroad I ended up meeting many people from London (photographers, stylist assistants, etc) and one from Ireland on the job. One band we worked with later gave me and another assistant Guest-List tickets to their show in London, just for working with them on a shoot. How amazing is that? I was always running into different people I had worked with
London Fashion Week '14
whether it was at Fashion Week or at a small shoot in the city. Everywhere you go.. NETWORK. You wil thank yourself for it later. Lastly, It's amazingly fun! I had never done anything in Fashion before this. I was so entirely humbled to be apart of photo shoots, video shoots, London Fashion Week, etc. I met many established hair-stylists, photographers, models, etc. The model pictured above is Becca Dudley, an MTV UK presenter. She was incredibly sweet and photogenic which made the day go by smoothly. I'm so grateful that Rebekah gave me a chance and taught me the ropes of the Industry. I learned so much about Fashion, Culture, Music, Representation, Responsibility, etc. I met many amazing people from all over the world and shared some great laughs and memories i will never forget. Enjoy your internships and be sure to make some memories with those you meet. It will make working together that much better.

Participating in an Internship in any area that you choose will largely benefit you no matter what. Take a chance and apply to anything that you want to pursue. Gain some experience in the working world. Take advantage of every opportunity that is thrown your way. You will likely get a letter of recommendation and some real-world experience on your resume. I promise you will learn so much about yourself as an individual in an internship, and be better for it in the end.. Good Luck!
